Wenceslas IV. future King of the Holy Roman Empire and Bohemia - education of the monarch, preparation for future rule. 4. The difficult legacy of Charles IV - the monarchical mechanism of his famous father. 5. The first period of the reign of Wenceslas IV. (1378-1383): taking over the monarchical mechanics of Charles IV. 6. The second period of the reign of Wenceslas IV. (1384-1393): conflict with the archbishop, beginning disputes with the nobility, transformation of the monarch's entourage. 7. The third period of the reign of Wenceslas IV. (1394-1403): lordly unity, double kidnapping of the monarch, loss of the imperial crown. 8. The fourth period of the reign of Wenceslas IV. Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to learn about the mechanisms of Wenceslas IV. during his reign in the years 1378-1419. Although this is a topic that mainly includes the reign of Wenceslas IV., we must also take into account the aspects that shaped his reign. They can be called a legacy from Charles IV., whether in the form of the education of the future monarch, his provision, or the advisors who passed from Charles to his son. However, this legacy also handed over to Wenceslas a number of problems that influenced his reign and his life path. It is absolutely essential for understanding Wenceslas' method of government to understand the context of the period and the crisis that manifested itself both in the lands of the Bohemian Crown and in Europe and its consequences escalated to the Hussite Wars. The main topic of this course will therefore be what mechanisms Wenceslas IV. used to cope with the events that occurred during his reign.
Students should gain a basic overview of the way Wenceslas IV ruled. Emphasis will be placed on the crisis that prevailed during the reign of Wenceslas IV in comparison with the European context (papal schism, conflict between imperial cities and nobility, Hundred Years' War). It will also be essential to be familiar with the significant life and political stages of Wenceslas IV, knowledge of which should help to understand the mechanisms of this monarch's rule. The greatest attention will be paid to attempts to resolve the crisis situations that befell the reign of Wenceslas IV.
