1. European development: religious life, its birth, its variants, its development in the early Middle Ages 2. European development: the development of monasticism in the High and Late Middle Ages (the emergence of individual orders and religious orders) 3. Trends in contemporary European monasticism; the development of Czech and Moravian monasticism in the past (since the 18th century) and in the present (history, musicology, archaeology, art history, etc.) 4. The beginnings of monasticism in the Czech lands, the earliest Czech Benedictine monasteries in Bohemia (until the turn of the 11th and 12th centuries) 5. The upheavals of the 12th century - the arrival of the Cistercians and Premonstratensians; their early development 6. Knightly orders in the Bohemian lands - Johannites, Knights Templar, Teutonic Knights 7. The mendicant orders - Minorites (Clares), Dominicans (Dominican Sisters), Red Star Crusaders, Augustinians Eremites 8. Religious map of the Czech lands in the pre-Hussite period - old monasteries, the arrival of new religious orders (Augustinian canons, Carmelites) 9. Anticlericalism and antimendicanism in the pre-Hussite period as stirrers of the social atmosphere; problems and criticism of monasticism 10. Hussite wars and the swan song of Czech monastic life (exile and efforts to return); degree of destruction, differences in Bohemia and Moravia, attempts at renewal in the post-Hussite era (Franciscan Observants) 11. Learning outcomes
|
A lecture series focusing on the phenomenon of medieval monasticism in Bohemia and Moravia in its European context. Attention will be paid in the introduction first to the pan-European development, the outlining and understanding of which is crucial for the following interpretation focusing already on the Czech lands (Bohemia and Moravia). The lectures will deal both with the chronological development and with the specifics of individual religious orders in the Czech and Moravian territory during the 10th to 15th centuries. Space will also be given to the depiction of significant turning points, as well as te outlining of lesser-known cultural and historical development coordinates. The series will therefore not only provide a chronological account of the development of monasticism in Bohemia and Moravia, but will also include some cross-cutting themes related to monastic life or its perception from the outside.
Students should first and foremost orient themselves to the literature available on the subject and become aware of its relevance to scholarly and popular science production on the topic. In addition, they should understand the explanatory value of sources related to the topic both in terms of their typology and their explanatory value to the questions answeted in the course. They will gain a basic factual overview of the development of monasticism in the Czech lands in the Middle Ages. They will understand the imprtance of Czech and Moravian monasteries as centres of spiritual, artistic, educational and literary activity.

Students are expected to attend class regularly. Successful completion of the course will be base on a short interview over one or two items of literature studied and presented in class.
