1. Basic concepts, development of sphragistic studies, terminology I. 2. Terminology II, sphragistic sources. 3. Sovereign seal in the Czech lands. 4. Noble seal in the Czech lands. 5. City and burgher seal, sphragistics of guilds and other city corporations. 6. Sphragistics of other layers of society. 7. Heraldry: basic concepts, development of heraldic studies, terminology I. 8. Terminology II, heraldic sources. 9. Blazoning of coats of arms. 10. Heraldic law. Sovereign and provincial emblems of the Czech lands. 11. Coat of arms in the aristocratic environment in the Czech lands. 12. Church heraldry 13. City, guild and municipal heraldry. 14. State symbols of Czechoslovakia 1918-1993.

Learning outcomes
|
The course deals with the development of Czech sphragistic and heraldic studies, taking into account the broader European context; heraldic and sphragistic terminology; principles of describing seals and coats of arms and royal, aristocratic, ecclesiastical, urban and municipal heraldry and sphragistics; as well as the heraldry of the historical lands of the Kingdom of Bohemia and the state symbols of Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic in the years 1918-1993.
The student will demonstrate knowledge of: heraldic and sphragistic terminology, sources and literature; blasoning of emblems and seals, basic heraldic figures and tinctures; the origins of heraldry; the development of royal, aristocratic, church, city and guild heraldry and sphragistics in the Czech lands; heraldic symbols of the historical lands of the Kingdom of Bohemia and state symbols of Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic in the years 1918-1993. The student will demonstrate the following skills: the ability to work independently with heraldic and sphragistic artifacts; description, assessment and inclusion of these artifacts in the context of the period.
