Course content
1. The invention of printing (inspirational sources, technological essence) 2. The spread of printing in Europe in the second half of the 15th century (European first printings) 3. The first printing period in Bohemia and Moravia 4. Printing in Bohemia and Moravia from 1500 to 1621 5. Printing in the Czech lands from 1621 to 1800 6. Printing and its confessional determinants in Bohemia and Moravia in the pre-White Mountain period (Brotherly Unity) 7. European printing in the early modern period 8. The journey of the book to the reader - the early modern book trade 9. Book censorship in the early modern period 10. The early modern book and its reader (bourgeois libraries) 11. The early modern book and its reader (noble and church libraries) 12. Basic terminology of description first prints and old prints, development of their formal features 13. Cataloging first prints and old prints, working with professional guides (printed + online resources) 14. Excursion to a memory institution with historical book collections and active practice of cataloging work with old prints

Learning outcomes
The student will gain an overview of the history of book culture in the area of printed books up to 1800 in the Czech lands in the context of European development. He will become familiar with the method of processing and cataloguing first editions and old prints. The concept of the subject is within the methodological scope of bibliography and the history of book culture.
The student should gain a basic overview of the history of Czech book culture in the early modern period in the context of European development. At the same time, he should be able to prepare a basic catalogue description of first and old prints and work with registration aids for early modern printed books.
Prerequisites
1. Knowledge of English and German is required in connection with the study of professional literature and the preparation of papers and reviews.

Verification of study results will take place in the form of a written test. The basic conditions for completing the course will be active participation in seminars combined with the presentation of a paper on a selected topic of European history of book culture in the early modern period based on foreign professional literature and the preparation of a review of a selected title of current professional literature (domestic or foreign) in the field of history of book culture.
