Learning outcomes
The course enables to learn about the development and the main types of Latin script until the end of the Middle Ages and to learn the basics of reading the scripts used in medievaltexts written in the Czech lands until the beginning of the 16th century. Emphasis is placed on the development of Latin paleography up to the early modern period, its periodisation, types of scripts and mastering the basics of reading diplomatic and literary texts of the 12th-15th centuries.
The student will acquire knowledge of paleographic terminology, writing materials and nomenclature of the various types of latin script from the middle of the first millennium BC to the 15th century; knowledge of the development, periodization and basic types of Latin script. The student will acquire skills in reading, transliterating, and transcribing legible Gothic minuscule and cursive; reading and deciphering abbreviations of Carolingian and Gothic minuscule; and knowledge of methods by which the acquired fundamentals of reading legible Gothic minuscule and cursive can be further deepened and refined.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of the basics of Latin, good knowledge of German language.
