Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is to deepen basic theoretical knowledge in the field of archival material organization, which students learn about in the Archival Science course. However, this course offers a more in-depth and problem-oriented interpretation, primarily connected with practical tasks aimed at mastering the basic principles of this key skill for archivists of all levels. Both parts of the course will cover the basic stages of archival material processing, starting with the disposal procedure and continuing with the definition of what we refer to as an archival collection. The course will cover the basic types of collections and issues related to the various options for organizing them, and above all, the possibilities offered by an existing collection arrangement that is unsatisfactory (e.g., one created in the second half of the 19th century based on the principle of pertinence).
Students will master advanced theoretical principles of archival material organization. They will be able to accurately characterize the phases of archival work with an emphasis on the processing of archival materials. Students will be able to theoretically explain the basics of organizing various types of materials created up to the mid-19th century, as well as justify the re-inventorying of relevant collections.
