Diplomatics is one of the basic courses necessary for archival practice. It deals with the material that archivists encounter most frequently, namely official documents from the earliest times to the present. However, it is not exclusively concerned with official documents, but also pays attention to the institutions (offices, authorities) where these documents were created. In the second part of the course, the teaching focuses on the demise of old offices, the transformation of existing ones, and the creation of new ones after the social changes of 1848, as well as the structure of their documents; the bureaucratization of state administration, rules of procedure and filing systems, and the transformation of central offices in response to the social changes of 1918, 1945-1948, and 1989.
Students will gain knowledge about the development and typology of documents produced by state administration, local government, agricultural and industrial corporations from the mid-19th to the second half of the 20th century; and will acquire the ability to recognize and evaluate the significance of these documents.
