The course introduces students to the development and main types of Latin script up to the end of the Middle Ages. The aim of the course is to acquire a basic theoretical minimum, but above all to learn the basics of reading the scripts in which the source texts in the Czech lands are written. Emphasis is placed on individual and group reading of selected sources, always proceeding from simpler texts, which are written in the highest level of calligraphy, to the most common texts, written in cursive script. The last part of the course focuses primarily on the period from the end of the 17th to the 20th century and the development of scripts used in our territory. This is still a period when neo-Gothic script (so different from today's humanistic script) predominates in written and printed texts, and therefore requires close attention. It is also a period in which the most paleographically challenging texts are written in an advanced form of neo-Gothic cursive, known as Kurrent.
Students have a theoretical understanding of the development of writing in the early modern period and in the 19th century. They are able to characterize the basic stages of development and describe changes in the use of writing during this period. They can read moderately difficult texts from this period. They also have a command of the system of basic abbreviations found in diplomatic sources.
