Learning outcomes
The course introduces students to the development and main types of Latin script up to the end of the Middle Ages. The aim of the course is to acquire a basic theoretical minimum, but above all to learn the basics of reading the scripts in which the source texts in the Czech lands are written. Emphasis is placed on individual and group reading of selected sources, always proceeding from simpler texts, which are written in the highest level of calligraphy, to the most common texts, written in cursive scripts. In this second part, the course will introduce the development of neo-Gothic and humanistic scripts and teach the basics of reading these scripts, which were used to write modern texts in the Czech lands from the early 16th to the 20th century. While less attention is paid to humanistic script, as it was used exclusively for Latin texts at that time, considerably more space is devoted to the interpretation and instruction in reading neo-Gothic script. Students have a theoretical understanding of the development of writing in the early modern period. They are able to characterize the basic stages of development and describe changes in the use of writing during this period. They can read moderately difficult texts from this period. They also have a command of the system of basic abbreviations found in diplomatic sources.
