Learning outcomes
The course introduces students to the development and main types of Latin script up to the end of the Middle Ages. The aim of the course is to acquire a basic theoretical minimum, but above all to learn the basics of reading the scripts in which the source texts in the Czech lands are written. Emphasis is placed on individual and group reading of selected sources, always proceeding from simpler texts, which are written in the highest level of calligraphy, to the most common texts, written in cursive script. The first part of the course focuses on the development of Latin paleography until the beginning of the modern era, its periodization, types of scripts, and mastering the basics of reading diplomatic and literary texts from the 12th to 15th centuries. Students are also introduced to the development of writing materials, their specifics, and the writing tools used.
Students have a theoretical understanding of the development of writing in the Middle Ages. They are able to characterize the basic stages of development and describe changes in the use of writing during this period. They can read moderately difficult texts from this period. They also have a command of the system of basic abbreviations found in diplomatic sources.
