Course content
1. Shakespeare's work through the lens of modern literary criticism. 2.+3. Modern trends in British and American drama and film. 4.+5. Multiculturalism and Post-Colonialism. African American novel. 6.+7. New representatives and new topics in British and American women's and feminist literature. 8.-10. Modern poetry. Contemporary poetry. Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is to introduce the students to contemporary literary development in the Anglo-American world and the world at large based on the critical analysis of selected literary works. This course further develops students' critical thinking, which is one of the prerequisites for successful passing of the state exam. Along with the obligatory class "Literary theories -- An Introduction," it concludes literary studies in the field. Students will have the opportunity to re-visit important stages of literary development and trace the similarities and differences in the development of British and American literature. Students fine-tune their preparations for their M.A. State Exam, especially in terms of literary theory and criticism.
Students demonstrate at the ability to compare and contrast phenomena in recent British and American literary development using current literary theory and criticism.
Basic knowledge of the Anglophone literary history (B.A. level).
