Course content
Teacher trainees will be aware of the necessity to use basic didactic principles. A special attention will be devoted to cooperative and collaborative learning in connection with their integration of children's books and literary texts in their pupils´ language learning process. A significant part of the course is devoted to teacher trainees´ work with literary texts and children's books. From the very beginning teacher trainees learn to incorporate the application of higher-order thinking skills in their work with young learners.

Learning outcomes
This course is part of a group of didactic subjects and its main aim is to focus on the importance of READING of English texts at the primary school level and on the development of reading skills in young learners. Apart from quite a wide theme of READING, in which the course builds on the results of recent research in activities the area of Didactics of English Literature and which confirms the necessity to expose young learners to reading children ´s books and working with rich vocabulary of various types of literature, the teacher trainees will also learn how to work with the texts, how to adapt them and think about further activities that will enable them to support further language skills in their prospective language learners. For that reason it will also focus on our understanding students´ individual differences, on our planning and organizing literature instruction and on teaching students how to improve their English through literature. The theoretical part will be built on a series of essays on teaching literature. Thus students should be acquainted with different approaches to teaching literature and learn about the changes brought to teaching literature in the last couple of decades. In the practical part of the course the participants will learn- how to inspire curiosity of their students , how to make students read for pleasure. They will be able to prepare their students for new ways of seeing the world in its complexity; give students vocabulary that will enable them to discuss things and improve their English; think creatively and critically in connection with using literature for the broadening of their own experience and practical knowledge; The teacher trainees will also focus on strengthening the following strategies: strategies of cooperative learning, reading strategies; strategies supporting creative and critical thinking and reflective strategies.
The Acquired Competences: - knowledge of new techniques and strategies of reading and work with children's books - making use of these techniques while working with different types of texts in the classroom - ability to use narrative strategies - ability to adapt texts for young learners - making use of creative dramatics and role playing for the development of young learners´ communicative strategies.
Prerequisites
The main pre-requisite of this course is the students´ interest in - making their preparation for their future profession more intensive - finding new opportunities for learning new skills and strategies important for - working with young learners - getting acquainted with new techniques of work leading to students´ activity in the classroom
