Course content
1. Subject of lexicology , conception of word and vocabulary, lexicalisation 2. Literal and associative meaning of words (conotation, denotation), Conceptualisation 3. Semantic change 4. Sense relations ( synonymy, antonymy, homonymy etc.) 5. Semantic classification. Categorisation, Prototypes 6. Word groups, collocations, idioms, phrasal verbs 7. Lexical innovation, Neologisms 8. Aktionsart 9. Lexical borrowning 10.Word formation ( coderivation, compounding, blending, clipping etc.) 11. Cognitive linguistics. Language and the brain 12. Introduction to corpus linguistics

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the nature and structure of the vocabulary of contemporary English. Students should be able to recognize the variability of the system and the factors that affect it.
At the end of the semester students will be able: - to practically apply theoretical knowledge: to identify denotations and connotations of words in practical examples - they will be able to identify word-formational processes of individual lexemes - they will actively expand their vocabulary and demonstrate the skill to use it appropriately in selected exercises and even in their speech production - they will recognize the variability of the system and the factors that affect it.
Prerequisites
Students are obliged to participate actively in the seminar, read relevant literature and pass credit tests in order to get a credit from this seminar. Students must be able to actively communicate in English, at least on level B2.

Active participation in the seminars, Ability to work with given texts. Following the content of theoretical lectures. Presentation of a given linguistic text. Minimum participation in the seminars 70%. Successful completion of the credit test. Successful completion of the exam.
