Students acquire a knowledge of the material, social and intellectual sides of the US and UK culture and throughout the course they will have the opportunity to read, analyse and discuss authentic texts in English about the history of the USA and the UK and other English speaking countries as well as to discuss the everyday life in these countries.

Learning outcomes |
This course provides the cultural context for the study of language and literature at the English Department. Students gain information about the material, social, and intellectual culture of the United States, and they have the the opportunity to read, analyse, and discuss authentic English texts about everyday American life and history.
At the end of the semester students - Understand the main events in the historical development of the USA, UK and other English-speaking countries; - Gradually understand the context of the current political, economical and cultural developments of the countries in question; - by well structured reading the students learn to understand the important issues in the field of history, economy and the political life of the USA and the UK; - Will be able to discuss topics effectively and engage in class discussions both independently and within a group. |

Assessment methods and criteria |

1.) Every week there will be either a quiz or an in-class activity about the lecture from the previous week. 2.) Each quiz/activity will be worth 10 points. 3.) There will be approximately 12 quiz/activities total. I will drop the two lowest scores and find the average of eleven. 4.) There is NO POSSIBILITY to "make up" missed quizzes/activities; students may miss two without hurting their final mark. 5.) STUDENTS MUST HAVE AN AVERAGE OF 65 % OR HIGHER |
