Course content
1. Discipline introduction, faculties and universities, professional career. 2. Organizational structure of university, faculties, academic year and its parts, system of studies (courses - names, content, credit system, organizational structure of university, faculties, diploma thesis, final examination). 3. Description of discipline in terms of study and practical application. 4. Academic text (annotation/resumé of an academic text). 5. Topic I.: training, presentation. 6. Topic II.: reading of an academic text. 7. Basic composition in formal correspondence (curriculum vitae, letter of application). 8. Topic III.: discussion on a specific topic. 9. Topic IV.: listening of lectures at university. 10. Topic V.: past tenses. 11. Topic VI.: expressing future. 12. Topic VII.: stylistics of academic texts. 13. Topic VIII. 14. Final test.

Learning outcomes
The course focuses on language acquisition for academic and professional use at the intermediate and upper-intermediate level (B1 - B2 level of the Common European Framework). The aim is to develop reading skills and strengthen the communication skills in different professional and academic situations. According to students´ needs vocabulary and grammatical structures important for professional style of particular disciplines will be practiced as well.
Student knows the basic vocabulary of his/her discipline, can understand an academic text, is able to understand a lecture on own discipline in a foreign language, prepare and give a presentation in a foreign language concerning his/her discipline.
Prerequisites
Level B1 according to Common European Language Framework.

Assessment methods and criteria

Test and exam which includes an introduction of students´ field of study and translation of an academic text related to their discipline, active participation in seminars, presentation.
