Learning outcomes |
This course is intended primarily for students who treat interactions of particles at atomic level in their Ph.D. theses. The course extends and augments knowledge and skills of students in the following areas of quantum mechanics: - Approximate methods of solution of the Schrödinger equation: variational principle, perturbation theory, density functional theory. - Hydrogen-like atom: energy spectrum and orbitals, selection rules. - Multi-electron atoms: Pauli exclusion principle, Slater determinant, spectroscopic terms. - Methods of quantum chemistry. - Molecules: Born-Oppenheimer approximation, valence bond theory and molecular orbitals. - Symmetry in quantum chemistry.
