Course content
Introduction to the general study of animal behaviour, how animals process and respond to environmental stimuli. The role of behaviour in the evolution of animals Treatments of physiology, learning, memory, hormonal behaviour. Fixed action patterns, communication, ontogeny of behaviour The ecology of behaviour , stressing the links between environmental factors, behaviour, and resultant patterns of organismal distribution and abundance,. Teritoriality, ungulate and primate dispersion, colonial breeding . Insect society, how an insect society is organised Evolution of social behaviours Sexual selection, mating system evolution, paternal care, kin selection, eusocial behaviour.

Learning outcomes
A course is focused on the scientific study of animal sensation, perception, cognition, behaviour, and behavioural interactions within and outside the species. Includes instruction in ethology, behavioural evolution, cognition and sensory perception, motivators, learning and instinct , functional behaviour and applications to specific behaviours and patterns as well as to specific phyla and species. The course is open to undergraduate students having successfully completed Invertebrate Zoology as well as Vertebrate Zoology.
