Course content
The plant cell. Cell organelles and other structures: Mitochondria, plastids, the nucleus, ribosomes, the endoplasmatic reticulum, vacuoles, microtubules and microfilaments. The cell cycle, mitosis. Meiosis and its importance. The structure and development of the plant body, and the anatomy of stems. Development of tissues of the primary plant body. Protoderm, ground meristem, procambium. Primary tissues. Primary vascular tissues: primary phloem and xylem. The dicotyledonous and monocotyledonous stem. The structure of leaves. Anatomy of foliate leaf. Leaf shape. The structure of roots. Radicle, primary root, adventitious roots. The absorbing region of the root. Internal anatomy: the formation of primary and secondary tissues. Lycophytes, ferns and gymnosperm life cycle. The flower structure. Inflorescences. Angiosperm life cycle. The androecium. The gynoecium; placentation, embryo sac development, pollination, fertilization. Seeds and fruits. Embryo and seed development. Seed germination and dormancy. Development of the fruit; kinds of fruits. Dissemination of seeds and fruits. Plant ecology. Abiotic factors and limits. Physical resources and limiting factors: temperature, water abundance and salinity, nutrient availability. Adaptation for water balance and nutrient uptake. Population ecology. Population growth and regulation. Plant population strategies. Habitat fragmentation. Community ecology. Niche. Types of competition. Intraspecific and interspecific competition. Herbivorous predation. Succession.
