Learning outcomes
The course focuses on understanding social disadvantage in education as a long-term social phenomenon that significantly influences educational trajectories, school achievement, and life chances of children and young people. It draws on international research (especially PISA) and OECD concepts that demonstrate the relationship between the socioeconomic and sociocultural background of families and students? educational outcomes. Attention is paid to the concept of social disadvantage, its manifestations in school environments, and the possibilities of its identification based on observable impacts on education. An important part of the course is an overview of school-provided support, socio-pedagogical interventions, and mechanisms of social inclusion that can mitigate the effects of social disadvantage and contribute to more equitable educational opportunities. The course links theoretical knowledge with examples of educational practice and field experience.
Learning Outcomes After successful completion of the course, students will be able to: - define and explain key concepts of social disadvantage, social exclusion, and social stratification in education; - describe and interpret the relationship between socioeconomic and sociocultural background and educational outcomes using evidence from international research; - identify and analyse manifestations of social disadvantage in school environments, including those related to socially excluded localities; - apply principles of school-based identification of pupils experiencing social disadvantage based on observable educational barriers; - analyse and evaluate the impact of social exclusion on educational trajectories and school success; - assess the role of schools and socio-pedagogical interventions in supporting socially disadvantaged pupils and promoting social inclusion; - propose basic support and preventive strategies aimed at reducing educational inequality and social exclusion.
