Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to acquaint PhD students with the curricular aspects of science education with an emphasis on primary science education. (Science education should be viewed as a coherent whole from a curricular perspective.) The content of the subject's education is based on four main areas. The first area discusses curricular reform in the Czech Republic, changes in goals and contents of education, their relation to key competences and possibilities of planning and implementation of curriculum in relation to science education content. In the second area, attention will be paid to the concept of science literacy and its definition in various curricular documents. The PhD students will analyze how the individual components of science literacy are understood and anchored in relevant curriculum documents in different school systems in Europe or in the world. These activities are logically followed by a third area in which PhD students will focus on comparative analysis of the curriculum of science education in different school systems and at different levels of these systems. The fourth area will also discuss ways of evaluating learning outcomes and international research into science literacy (eg PISA). Questions will also be raised regarding undergraduate teacher education for primary school and science teacher education in relation to science literacy and its formation in pupils.
