Course content
|
1. Terms: word, appellation, lexeme. Vocabulary and its composition. 2. The world as semiotic space, the position of language (and words) in it. 3. Analysis and description of word meaning, its capture in the dictionary. Creating dictionary entries, work with dictionaries. Monolingual and special dictionaries of the Czech language. 4. Dissemination and transmission of word meanings, origin and development of polysemia. Dissemination and transmission of word meanings, narrowing and expanding the meaning of appellations. 5. Semantic relations in vocabulary - the position of synonymy and antonymy in communication. 6. Semantic relations in vocabulary - hyperonymy, hyponymy, cohyponymy. 7. Expansion of vocabulary by creating set collocations - associated names. 8. Expansion of vocabulary by creating set collocations - idioms. 9. Expansion of vocabulary by loaning from foreign languages. 10. Loanwords and set phrases in contemporary Czech. 11. Stratification of Czech vocabulary. Vocabulary layers. 12. Current development tendencies in the Czech vocabulary.

Learning outcomes
|
The course provides the student with the basic terminological system of lexicology and with approaches to the study and description of vocabulary. The student will gain a set of necessary knowledge about the current Czech vocabulary, its composition and arrangement and about the ways of its enrichment with regard to current development trends in the Czech lexicon. The course contains the science of vocabulary (lexical system) in the narrower sense.
