Course content
1. Slavonic studies as a scientific field, its origin, founders, historical context, branch. 2. Nostratic, Indo-European and Proto-Slavic homeland, waves of migration of Indo-Europeans and the Slavs. 3. Differentiation of Indo-European language family, Balto-Slavic language area. 4. Proto-Slavic as the oldest reconstructed language of the Slavs - origin, phases, typological features. The relation of Proto-Slavic to Old Slavonic. 5. Basic changes in the phonological development of the early period of Proto-Slavic. 6. Basic tendencies and changes in the phonological development of the classical period of Proto-Slavic. 7. Basic changes in the phonological development of the late period of Proto-Slavic. The disintegration of Slavic linguistic unity. 8. Old Slavonic as the first literary language of the Slavs, in Great Moravia and in the Czech lands, Old Slavonic graphics and Old Slavic literary monuments. 9. Overview of the Old Slavonic morphological system of declension of names. 10. Overview of the Old Slavic morphological system of conjugation of verbs and verb tenses. 11. Slavic languages in the past and today - reading and analysis of Old Slavic texts, the current state of graphic systems of Slavic languages, characteristics of their phonological, morphological and lexical system, work with texts in individual Slavic languages. 12. Final panel discussion on linguistic historical and political contexts on the current map of Slavic languages.

Learning outcomes
The course is focused on clarifying the linguistic phenomena of Slavic languages, especially in a comparative perspective. The topics of the seminars are focused on the Indo-European and Proto-Slavic region and differentiation of the Indo-European language family, on the division of Slavic language space and Proto-Slavic as the oldest Slavic proto-language and the oldest historical phase in Czech language history; on basic tendencies of Proto-Slavic phonological and morphological systém, and morphology of Old Slavonic language as 1st literary language in the Czech lands. An integral part of the course is a cultural-historical view of the oldest history of the Slavs, the Old Slavic tradition and the current state and position of Slavic languages.
