Course content
1. 1990s. Symbolism and decadence. Modern review. A new type of criticism. Březina, Hlaváček, Sova, Šalda. 2. Lyricized prose and drama. Mrštík, Svobodová, Těsnohlídek, Šrámek, Mahen etc. 3. From Sen o zástupu zoufajících to the poetry of the so-called buřiči. Šrámek, Toman, Kellner. 4. Prose of the anarchist generation. Hašek, Olbracht. Personalities of the first wave of expressionism: Klíma, Deml. 5. Neoclassicism. Bří Čapková, Dyk, Langer etc. Polemic with individualism in prose during the First World War. 6. Literature reflecting the First World War. Hašek. Legionary literature. 7. Literature expressing the vision of the new world. Proletkult. Proletarian poetry. Hora, Wolker etc. 8. Birth of the avant-garde. Relation to European literature, the role of Čapek's translations of French poetry, Neumann's Červen, Devětsil and their connections to the European avant-garde. Teige. 9. Learning outcomes
The lectures follow the basic tendencies and movements of Czech literature from the end of the 19th century to the end of the 1920s. Literary development is presented in the context of both historical events and the cultural and political situation of the domestic and Europe, authors, poets, novelists and playwrights. Part of the seminar program is to get acquainted with the relevant literature and the basics of literary historical work.it shows the links of Czech literature with contemporary trends of advanced European cultures both in the literary and especially in fine arts. The seminars are designed with an emphasis on the analysis and interpretation of selected key works of authors, poets, novelists and playwrights.
