This course aims to introduce students to the study of the English language, which will become their profession, and to familiarize them with the fundamentals of linguistic disciplines that will be part of their studies within the bachelor's degree program. The intention is to acquaint students with the complexity of the language system and the different approaches to its analysis. Students will become familiar with individual levels of the linguistic system as well as its complexity and interconnectedness. The course will open students' perspectives on the study of language and its aspects that are essentially important for understanding language functions and characteristics in general, as well as in specific aspects typical of the English language. The course also aims to familiarize students with the historical development of the English language and with existing language families and the typology of world languages. The course will also outline the problem of differences between language acquisition and language teaching. Upon completion of the course, students will be prepared for the study of subsequent linguistic disciplines.- they can also use the acquired skills in writing (the skills to argue with support from the studied literature). The course provides a brief overview of applied linguistic sciences and focuses on issues of first and second language acquisition. It also examines language in its social context. Students are introduced to the complex system of language and individual linguistic levels. The course concludes by providing students with an overview of the history of linguistic studies.
