The aim of the course is to develop basic literary knowledge acquired while studying the Czech language in high school, to familiarize students with basic terminology in the English language and with the method of analyzing a literary text. The one-hour lecture emphasizes the acquisition of the necessary knowledge, but will not enable the acquisition of the full range of skills. Students will acquire these further in individual literary subjects. Lecture and seminar topics: 1. What is literature? 2. The language of literature 3. The language about literature 4. Literature and history 5. Narrative fiction I 6. Narrative fiction II 7. Poetry I: lyric poetry 8. Poetry II: epic poetry 9. Drama I: comedy 10. Drama II: tragedy 11. Literature and literary theory Learning outcomes: Demonstrated knowledge and skills: Through lectures, students during the semester became familiar with literary terminology, which they will use in their further studies, especially in the subjects of British and American literature and cultural studies. They demonstrate knowledge of terminology in seminars when analyzing literary works. Furthermore - they distinguish between individual genres of prose, poetry and drama; - they are able to define individual literary devices; - they have learned to recognize their quality and effectiveness in basic texts.
