Lecture Topics: 1. week: Introduction. Organisation of modern neonatology and perinatology 2. week: Monitoring a newborn after the birth 3. week: The nutrition of a newborn 4. week: The physiology of a newborn period 5. week: Development defects of a newborn 6. week: The pathology of a newborn period 7. week: Respiratory distress syndrome, artificial lung ventilation 8. week: Newborns with a low birth weight Seminar Topics: 1. week: The first treatment of a newborn. The screening of a newborn. Evaluating the temperature environment 2. week: Newborn nutrition: natural and artificial feeding. Alternative feeding techniques: breast milk banks. 3. week: A nursing process for a newborn under oxygenotherapy. Distension treatment and artificial lung ventilation. 4. week: A nursing process of a newborn with hepatitis. 5. week: A nursing process of a newborn with selected congenital defects. 6. week: A nursing process of a newborn with pain. 7. week: Evaluation methods and techniques in neonatology. 8. week: Resuscitation of a newborn.

Learning outcomes
The subject is a core discipline designed as theoretically-practical. It provides the students with complex knowledge of the care after a newborn. The clinical part of the subject is focused on basic anatomical and physiological knowledge about the newborns; it offers the classification of the newborns based on the clinical physiological states including risky or pathological and explains the causes and the possibilities of high-level care. Students will train basic skills related to the competencies of a birth assistant, which are: first treatment of a physiological newborn after the birth, the care after a newborn in after-birth period.
Subject Knowledge: Student is able to define the state of a physiological newborn, describe the difference between physiological and pathological newborn, he is able to evaluate the state of a newborn using various evaluation scales appropriate for the newborns, he is able to name the advantage of breastfeeding, explain the rules, effective methods of oxygenotherapy, he knows the present legislation related to the care after a mother with a child, he is able to describe the rules and principles of resuscitation of a newborn. Professional Skills: Student is able to perform basic nursing procedures with a newborn (the first treatment, resuscitation), he can evaluate the adaptation of a newborn; he can provide early and quality resuscitation of a newborn and select appropriate evaluation /scaling techniques for a newborn.
