Course content
Lecture Topics: 1. week: Introduction: general and special surgery, the fields of surgery. 2. week: Examination methods in surgery. The basics of anaesthetics and analgesics. 3. week: Basic operation techniques. Early injuries, burns. 4. week: Head and neck, chest and mammary gland surgery. 5. week: Abdomen surgery. Polytrauma. The accidents during pregnancy. 6. week: The surgery of limbs, spine: fractures, the injuries of joints, ligaments and tendons. 7. week: Sudden abdomen incidents, inflammations. 8. week: Tumor development: operative treatment. Seminar Topics: 1. week: Surgery segments and equipment. Operation rooms. The activites of a non-medical staff in surgical care. Preparation of the patient for a surgical examination 2. week: The assistance of a midwife during anaesthetic application. The care after the patients with burns, the Intensive Care Unit and its operation. 3. week: The activities of a midwife in the operation room, pre-operation tasks, peri-operation and postoperation care. 4. week: The care after the patient with the unconsciousness after the injury. Nursing care after a patient after a thyroid gland operation. 5. week: Nursing care after a patient with intestinal congestion, stomia and cholecystitidis. 6. week: Nursing care after a patient after amputation. Nursing care after a patient after implantation of endoprosthesis. 7. week: Nursing care after a patient with pancreatitis. Nursing care after a patient with acute appendicitis. 8. week: Nursing care after a patient after a breast operation. Nursing care after a patient with colic.

Learning outcomes
The subject is theoretically - practical and it is a part of a complex set of clinical nursing subjects. It introduces the students with the issues of asepsion, antisepsion, prevention of nosocomial infections, barriers of nursing care, the basics of disinfection and sterilization. It includes all stages of pre-operational care and covers the basics of anaesthesiology. It shows the students acute and chronical states which require the operation focused on the surgical issues of a body cavity and sudden states requiring surgical treatment with the focus on a woman and a child.
Subject Knowledge: Student understands the issues in the field of surgery, he knows the types of anaesthetics; he is able to define the rules of diagnostics and treatment for selected surgical cases. He knows the symptoms of acute abdomen, he understands the specifics of patient's preparation for certain operations. Professional Skills: Student is practically able to prepare the patient for a surgical examination and an operation. Student is able to identify post-operational complications and he knows how to deal with them. He is able to provide a complex nursing care after the patients with specific surgical treatments. He knows professional tasks of different segments of surgery.
