Lecture Topics: 1. week: The connections between philosophy and ethics in nursing. 2. week: The definition of terms: philosophy and ethics, basic philosophical categories. 3. week: The sources of nursing ethics. 4. week: Protection of human rights and dignity. 5. week: Ethics as a science about morality. 6. week: Ethics of dying and death. 7. week: Ethical problems at the beginning of life. 8. week: Ethical aspects of caring after a sick child. 9. week: The ethics of research in medicine and midwifery. 10. week: The ethics of transplants. 11. week: Reproduction and therapeutic cloning. Seminar Topics: 1. week: The definition of ethics in midwifery. 2. week: Modern ethical principles. 3. week: Hippocrates tradition, Jewish-Christian tradition, modern philosophical directions. 4. week: The Treaty on human rights and biomedicine. 5. week: Ethical codes and requirements for their acceptance. The rights of the patients and their role in medicine humanization. 6. week: Telling the truth at the hospital bed. 7. week: Advising for the bereaved. 8. week: The issues of assisted reproduction. 9. week: The issues of interruption 10. week: Children's rights. 11. week: Pregnancy loss/termination.

Learning outcomes
|
Subject provides the information about the ethical aspects of nursing and midwifery. Nursing profession should be based on a professional approach towards the patient. The subject introduces the integration of ethical principles into the ethical codes and shows ethical dilemmas appearing among the medical professionals in their attitudes to the clients/patients and their families. The subject helps to develop reasoning considering the freedom of thinking and speech. The aim of the subject is to understand the value system (a belief, a conviction), with creates the background for the professional behaviour of birth assistants, to understand the changes in cooperation between a medical professional and a woman, a client/a patient and the family; it introduces the basic philosophical categories, it helps understanding the connections between philosophy, medicine and nursing.
Subject Knowledge: Students know basic philosophical and ethical concepts which affect and help with creating professional ethics of a health care provider. Professional Skills: Student is able to explain the rules of present ethical codes used in health care, which are then discussed in details at the seminars and in individual assignments focused on selected ethical problems in health care.
