Course content
Seminar topics: (2 hours/week) 1. Health - definition, determinants, healthy lifestyle. Historical development of catering. Nutritional habits of the population. Nutritional risk factors. The influence of nutrition on the emergence of mass non-infectious diseases. 2. Physiology of nutrition. Energy and biological value of food. Basal metabolism. 3. Diet composition and the importance of individual components in human nutrition. Vitamins and avitaminoses. 4. Mineral substances. Drinking regimen. 5. A healthy diet. Daily recommended nutrient intakes. Nutritional recommendations. Types of referrals. 6. Malnutrition. Malabsorption. Assessment of nutritional status, nutritional screening (MUST, MNA, NRS, SGA, PINI). 7. Nutrition of newborns, infants, premature infants. Breast milk substitutes. Breast feeding 8. Specifics of child nutrition, child nutrition in individual periods of development (nutrition of toddlers, preschoolers, schoolchildren) School meals. Principles of feeding children in individual periods of development 9. Hygiene and food safety. Nutrition and Food Safety Strategy 10. Nutrition of a woman during pregnancy and lactation. Nutrition in old age. Alternative ways of eating 11. Celiac disease. Food allergies. Anorexia. Bulimia. 12. Obesity and childhood obesity. Dietary eating system. Basics of enteral nutrition. Nutrition of the sick. Realiment, hydration.

Learning outcomes
The course is designed as a theoretical unit. It is an introduction to the care of the basic human need - nutrition. It provides comprehensive information on nutrition and its importance for the overall health of a person. It points to specifically focused nutrition in individual periods of life - from newborns to old age. The crucial role of nutrition in primary disease prevention is described. The course introduces the risk factors of nutrition and the nutritional habits of the population, as well as the system of diet and nutrition in the disease. Attention is also paid to the issue of food safety.
Expertise: The student demonstrates broad knowledge in the field of nutrition, knows the basic need for daily doses of nutrients, vitamins and minerals in health and disease. The student demonstrates broad knowledge in the field of energy needs of the organism, nutritional requirements of the individual with regard to age, gender and health status. The student knows and promotes breastfeeding as the most appropriate nutrition for the newborn. Professional skills: The student is able to objectively evaluate alternative ways of nutrition in terms of nutritional needs. General competences: The student is able to clearly and convincingly communicate information about the nature of professional problems and propose solutions.
