Course content
Lecture Topics: The First Consultation: Nursing as a science, nursing development, the definition of the field, the conceptions and definitions of nursing, fields of nursing, nursing relationship to other disciplines. The holistic philosophy of nursing, nursing metaparadigms. The history of Czech nursing and the development of nursing in the Czech Republic. Historical development of nursing in Europe, in the world, historical development of nursing education. The Second Consultation: Nursing process: nursing process theory, definitions, a historical perspective on the development of nursing process, stages and characters, the meaning of process application in clinical training, documentation. The conception of modern nursing: nursing conception in the Czech Republic, characteristics specialisition in a field, the character of modern nursing, distinctive features. Nurse's role: nurse´s personality and characteristics, training and the competence of nurses. Regulatory system of the nursing profession, registration, legislation in nursing. Research in nursing: the characteristics of research, the fields of research, research methodology, nurses' participation in research, the importance of research for the development of nursing, nursing models.

Learning outcomes
The course is designed as a theoretical basis for the study of nursing program. It defines nursing systemically taking it as a modern scientific discipline with its own philosophy, the system of values, the object of examination, theoretical models, standard terminology, classification systems and methodologies. It introduces the historical development of nursing in our country and in the world, multicultural nursing care, the scope of individual needs of a man, family and community, with the main tasks and functions of nursing in society and current trends including professional national and international organizations and their activities, the trend in the field and the effort to increase efficiency in health care systems and quality assurance of health care for population. The goal for a student is to understand nursing as a science, understand its development, history and at the same time the conception of Czech nursing, education, nursing training and legislation, and to understand the relationship between health - disease - nursing - environment.
Self-Study: Self-study will cover the part of the subject content which is listed in the curriculum syllabus. Self-study is guided by the teacher. The list of additional professional literature is very important. The feedback is in the form of case studies and seminar papers, where the teacher directly tests how students understand the issue and how they are ready for the further study. The contacts and the records of interim study results are presented in university information system. The records serve as the proof of an active self-study process. Self-study realisation is a prerequisite for granting a credit. Subject Knowledge: Students can: list nursing metaparadigms and describe the relationship between health - disease - nursing and environment, define nursing care for a person from the perspective of holistic philosophy, list the circumstances of the origin and the history of the nursing process, define the conception of modern nursing and nursing conception in the Czech Republic, explain the role of nurses, the nursing professional regulatory system and registration of nurses, describe the nursing research specifics. Professional skills: Students can: deal with the information and resources about the activities of international and national professional organizations extending their theoretical knowledge in the field, deal with the WHO European strategy documents for the education of nurses and midwifes and use it to widen the knowledge about the modern concept ion of nursing in the Czech Republic and in Europe on the basis of legislative knowledge and they can search for information regarding nurses'employment in the European Region

Assessment methods and criteria

The credit requirement will be 90% attendance of the lectures and elaboration of acceptable seminar work where students deal with one of the given nursery topics specified by the teacher. Students demonstrate the ability to work independently with the retrieved information using theoretical knowledge in the field. The subject will be finished with an oral exam.
