Course content
Lecture topics: 1. Development of sociology as an independent scientific discipline. 2. The process of socialization, social control. 3. Norms and deviant behavior. 4. Stratification of society. 5. Problems of social groups, typology. 6. Role theory, everyday life. 7. Life and family cycle. 8. Basic definition of sociology of medicine. 9. Interpretation of disease in sociological context. Talcott parsons. 10. Phase of the disease. 11. The process of sociological research. 12. Basic methods of data collection in sociological research.

Learning outcomes
The subject provides basic knowledge of sociology. It acquaints with the development of sociology as a scientific discipline, with the basic paradigms of sociological thinking and with leading representatives of the history of this science. Attention is paid to the process of socialization, the issue of social control, standards, deviations and social stratification. The course also deals with the stages of life and family cycle and introduces basic sociological theories. The attention is focused on sociology of medicine and basic models of relationships between health care professionals and patients. The subject also provides basic knowledge of the process and methods of sociological research.
Expertise: The student is acquainted with the fact what preceded the origin of sociology, is able to characterize basic sociological trends and can define the importance of the process of socialization. The student has an overview and can characterize basic sociological theories (such as social group theory, social stratification, deviant behavior, role theory), thereby better understanding selected aspects of human behavior. The student understands the importance of sociology of medicine, including the main focus of this subdiscipline (perception of the disease, the impact of the disease on the life of the individual and the family, models of relationships in medicine). The student is able to describe all phases of sociological research and is acquainted with basic methods of collecting sociological data, which he / she can characterize. Professional skills: The student is able to include selected sociological theories in the main sociological directions. The student is able to assign the relationships of health professionals and patients to individual theoretical models based on the real state, including the practical evaluation of the positive and negative consequences of applying these models in a particular situation. Students are able to prepare their own simple research including selection of a suitable method of data collection and construction of a simple research tool.

Active participation in lectures, accomplishing the conditions of written credit, the focus of this written test will be given by topics across the subject. Students will answer within the test by their words to pre-prepared questions and they will be scored for them. The minimum limit for successful completion of the course is 50% from the maximal number of points.
