The course provides basic understanding of the sociology fundamentals. It introduces the development of sociology as a scientific discipline with the basic paradigms of sociological thinking and with the historical leaders of the science. The emphasis is put on the process of socialization, social control issues, standards, deviances and social stratification. The subject also deals with stages of the life cycle and family and brings basic sociological theory. The course is also focused on the sociology of medicine and the basic models of relationships between health care professionals and patients. The subject also provides basic research models and methods of sociological research.
Subject Knowledge: The students know the origins of sociology, they can characterize the basic sociological trends and they can define the meaning of the socialization process. Students have the overview and they can characterize the basic sociological theory (eg. the theory of social groups, social stratification, deviant behavior, role theory), they have better understanding of some aspects of human behavior. Students understand the importance of medical sociology including the main focus of this sub-discipline (desease perception, the impact of the disease on the lives of individuals and families, the models of relations in medicine). Students can describe and characterize all phases of sociological research and they know the basics of sociological data collection. Professional Skills: Students can classify selected sociological theories and major sociological trends. Student can qualify the status based on real relation of healthcare professionals and patients following particular theoretical models, including practical evaluation of the positive and negative effects of applying these models in a particular situation. Students can conduct their own small research, including the selection of appropriate data collection methods and designing simple research tool.
