Course content
Lecture topics: 1st consultation: Demographic aspects of population aging. Definition of age, aging, classification, characteristics of geriatrics and gerontology. Theory of aging. Physical, mental and social changes in old age. Specialties of diseases in old age, atypical manifestations of diseases. The most common diseases of older age. Exercise topics: 2nd consultation: Health, nursing and social care for seniors in the Czech Republic. Development of care for seniors in the Czech Republic and in the world. Individual needs of seniors and their satisfaction. Neglect and abuse of a senior. Ethical aspects in elderly care. Specifics of communication with senior. Sexuality of seniors. Psychology of dying and death. Self-study: Specialties of nursing care for seniors in the home environment, consolidation and health promotion. Specialties of nursing care for seniors in medical facilities - acute care. Specialties of nursing care for seniors in social services. Nursing care for the elderly. Immobilization syndrome. Urinary and stool incontinence. Nursing care for seniors in delirium, dementia and depression. Nursing care for seniors in oncological diseases and in the terminal stage of the disease. Credit week. Summary of peculiarities in the implementation of nursing process in seniors.

Learning outcomes
This subject is a theoretical-practical unit and it is a part of the complex subject of clinical nursing. It acquaints students with involutional changes, health status and the most common clinical conditions in older age. Emphasis is placed on the individual needs of seniors in terms of nursing care provision.
Expertise: Student can: Define the age, aging and geriatric fields describe the theories of aging and the peculiarities of nursing care for the elderly with a holistic approach, describe the system of care for seniors in the Czech Republic. Professional skills: Student can: develop a care plan for the elderly in various situations requiring nursing care.

Min. 80% attendance at seminars. Passing the credit test min. to 80% Written exam - creation of a comprehensive nursing plan for a senior with a given disease.
