Course content
Lecture Topics: The First Consultation: Demographic aspects of the population aging. Definitions of the old age, classification, characteristics of geriatrics and gerontology. Aging theory. Physical, psychological and social changes in the elderly. The peculiarities of the diseases in old age, atypical manifestations of diseases. The most common diseases of the mature age. Medical, nursing and social care for the elderly in the Czech Republic. Development of care for the elderly in the Czech Republic and abroad. Seminars Topics: The First Consultation: Peculiarities of nursing care for the elderly in the domestic environment, consolidating and promoting health. Peculiarities of nursing care for the elderly in healthcare facilities: acute care. Peculiarities of nursing care for the elderly in the social services. Nursing care for the elderly with delirium, dementia and depression. Self-Study: Individual needs of the elderly and their satisfaction. The elderly abuse and neglect. Ethical aspects of care for the elderly. Communication with senior personality, sexuality among the senior citizens. Psychology of death and dying. Nursing care for the immobile elderly. Immobilization syndrome. The issue of incontinence of urine and stool. Nursing care for the elderly with the cancer and in the terminal stage of the disease.

Learning outcomes
The subject is designed as theoretically-practical unit and it is a part of the complex set of subjects from clinical nursing. It introduces the students to involution changes, health condition and the most common clinical conditions of mature age. The emphasis is put on the differences of individual needs of the elderly in terms of providing nursing care.
Subject Knowledge: The student is able to define the old age, aging and geriatrics. He can describe the theories on aging and the peculiarities of nursing care for the elderly with a holistic approach. Student can describe the system of care for the seniors in the Czech Republic. Professional Skills: Students can create a plan of care for the elderly in various situations requiring nursing care.
