Course content
Lecture topics: (2 hours/week) 1. Health, aspects of health, determinants of health. Protection and promotion of health, prevention of health damage. 2. Health inequalities, health equity, equity in health care provision. International documents on health protection and promotion, Health 21, Health 2020. 3. Public health - focus, content, components, implementation in practice, legislation. 4. Health education - definition and scope of the field, objectives, methods and forms of work. Epidemiology and prevention of non-communicable diseases. 5. Environment and health. Environmental hygiene. Hygiene of health care facilities. 6. Nutritional hygiene - scope of the field, objectives, methods and forms of work. Hygiene of children and adolescents - scope of the field, objectives, methods and forms of work. 7. Occupational hygiene - occupational health risk assessment - application in health care, job categorization, occupational health preventive examinations. Seminar topics: (2 hours/week). 1. Intervention programme focusing on living and working conditions and lifestyle. 2. Health education - group work. 3. Methods of health education. 4. The work of the nurse in the field of health education in communities. 6. Prevention of injuries in childhood. 7. Addictions in children and adolescents. Social issues.

Learning outcomes
The course is conceived as a theoretical. It is based on the objectives of the WHO Health in the 21st Century Programme and the National Health Promotion Programme. It provides basic information on hygiene and epidemiology in the protection and promotion of public health, on the prevention, spread and reduction of infectious diseases, health care-associated infections, chronic non-infectious mass-occurring diseases caused by inappropriate environment and lifestyle, and other major health disorders. It introduces the issues of childhood injuries, abuse, neglect and exploitation of children of all ages, bullying and addiction, its risks, prevention, treatment and follow-up care. Students will gain the knowledge to provide effective health education and information when risks are identified and when there is a direct threat to the health of individuals, families and communities.
Expertise: The student will acquire knowledge of health and the interaction of environment and lifestyle and the resulting negative or positive impacts on population health and measures to protect and promote the health of individual groups. They master the basics of environmental hygiene, nutritional hygiene, child and adolescent hygiene; they demonstrate knowledge of the effects of working conditions on the health of workers with a focus on health and preventive measures; they have a theoretical knowledge of health education; they master methods and forms of working with individuals and communities; they master the basics of epidemiology and non-infectious chronic diseases and their prevention. Professional skills: The student can develop a questionnaire to determine the knowledge, attitudes, health status of patients - clients; can develop an intervention program aimed at eliminating - reducing health risk factors. In the framework of primary, secondary and tertiary health education (non-smoking - smoking cessation, healthy eating, physical activity, prevention of addictions, participation in preventive examinations, healthy parenting, prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, etc.), can carry out health education in groups and communities, can cooperate in the implementation of measures to protect and promote health.
