Course content
Lectures Topics: The First Consultation: Introduction to surgery, particular sections, examination methods in surgery, basic surgical technique, asepsis, antisepsis, The Second Consultation: Perioperative care, types of interventions and operations in surgery, indications and contraindications for surgery, postoperative complications, the basics of anesthesia, analgesia The Third Consultation: Surgery of the spine and limbs The Fourth Consultation: Surgery of skin and soft tissue, infections in surgery The Fifth Consultation: Abdominal surgery, NPB The Sixth Consultation: Shock, burns Seminar Topics: The First Consultation: Specifics and sections of a nurse in surgery, the role of nurses in perioperative care, antisepsis, antisepsis, disinfection, sterilization, surgical infections, barrier nursing techniques, the care for drains The Second Consultation: Preoperative preparation of the patient, the nursing process in a patient after surgery: immediate care after surgery, postoperative care The Third Consultation: The nursing process of patients with fractures of the extremities, the nursing process in a patient with spinal neurosurgical operations The Fourth Consultation: The nursing process for wounded patients followed by wound sewing The Fifth Consultation: The nursing process for patients with selected diseases of the abdomen: appendicitis, physical examination of the abdomen sister, case studies, the experience of professional training The Sixth Consultation: The nursing process for the patients in a state of shock: shock haemorrhagic, monitoring, first aid, intervention sisters, prevention of complications, documentation, nursing process in burnt patient: barrier treatment, monitoring, documentation Self-Study: Nursing care in the surgical ward: students will be able to qualify the specifics of a nursing activity, sections in the surgical ward, nurses' activity organisation in all sections of the department, care of aids, disinfection, sterilization: knowledge from the field of care of aids, work schedules, rules for the use of disinfectant solutions, definition and types of disinfection and sterilization, operating room, complements of the operating room, preparation of sterile tables: students will know the operating segment tract, behavior and the specifics of work in the operating room, preparation of sterile tables / surgery performances. Nursing process for a patient with a chronic wound: stoma. Student will be able to list the different types of stoma, prepare a nursing care plan for a patient with stoma, aids, education. Nursing process in abdominal surgery. Student will be able to prepare a nursing care plan for the client after surgery in the abdominal cavity, describe the general principles and prepare nursing plan. Nursing process for the patients in intensive care: student will be able to prepare a nursing care plan for a patient with failure of vital functions.

Learning outcomes
The subject is designed as a theoretically-practical unit. It is a part of complex set of subjects from clinical nursing. It introduces the clinical conditions and diseases in surgery from the view of the nursing care of patient's needs which are changed in connection with a surgical disease. It characterizes clinical conditions, their etiology, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of abdominal and thoracic surgery, vascular surgery and cardiac surgery, urology, neurosurgery, orthopedics and traumatology, plastic surgery and burns. The subject includes the basics of anesthesiology, pediatric surgery and gerontochirurgie.
Subject Knowledge: Students will acquire basic overview of surgical diseases interconnecting anatomy, physiology, diagnostic and therapeutic process and the nursing process for the patients of all ages. The extent of teaching is only a framework and the guidance for the students leading to further study of the issue. Professional Skills: Students will know the issues in children's surgery, adults and gerontosurgery, students undertand the methods of evaluation of the patient's state in the perioperative period including children, adults and gerontosurgery, they will know the principles of preoperative, interoperational and postoperative care for the sick of all ages, they master specific skills and principles of aseptic way of working, prevention of nosocomial infections, they can provide basic and special nursing care for the patients through a nursing process in selected sections of surgery of all ages.

Assessment methods and criteria

The requirement for the credit granting is at least 85% attendance, the submission of an acceptable seminar paper: nursing case studies for each semester of study offered by the teacher. The exam is in the form of a written test.
