Course content
Lecture topics: (2 hours/week) 1. Diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in intensive care. 2. Cardiac failure. 3. Shock states. 4. Respiratory insufficiency. 5. Sepsis in childhood. 6. Disorders of consciousness. Seminar topics. 1. Basic monitoring in paediatric intensive care. 2. Nursing process in a child with cardiac failure. 3. Nursing process in a child with multiorgan failure. 4. Nursing process in a child with respiratory insufficiency. 5. Nursing process in a child with sepsis. 6. Nursing process in a child with impaired consciousness.

Learning outcomes
The course is designed as a theoretical and practical unit. The aim is to familiarize students with the most common conditions leading to hospitalization of a child in ARO, IMP and ICU and with the implementation of the nursing process in intensive care. The student will be familiar with the methods of communication with the critically ill child and their parents, with the long-term ill, chronically ill and dying child and adolescent. The student will have a basic knowledge of acute medicine, resuscitation and intensive care for children of all ages who are failing or at imminent risk of failing basic life functions, in accordance with the latest principles and professional knowledge.
Expertise: The student can distinguish and list the principles of monitoring and treatment in children in intensive care, can assess the child's condition, knows the manifestations of organ failure and can list the principles and complications associated with individual procedures and interventions that are applied in practice. Professional skills: The student will be able to assess the overall condition of the child in relation to their age, select and work with appropriate scaling techniques in critical care and methodology in the child in relation to their age and clinical condition. The student is able to carry out the nursing process in its individual stages with regard to the age stage and clinical condition of the child, including its individual peculiarities, and is able to choose the correct procedure. General competences: The student is able to apply theoretical knowledge and skills in natural conditions, is able to communicate with the client and members of the health care team.
