Learning outcomes
The course is designed as a theoretical and practical unit that provides students with the basic structure of knowledge in microbiology, immunology, epidemiology and hygiene. Students will learn the most important general properties of microorganisms, the basics of special microbiology, the structure and basic functions of the immune system, primary and secondary immunodeficiency, immunodeficiency disorders, immunomodulation, innate and acquired specific immunity and vaccination. In addition, students will gain a detailed understanding of the principles of proper collection and submission of biological material for laboratory testing. They will become familiar with the most important laboratory microbiological testing methods. They will acquire a basic knowledge of general and special epidemiology, anti-epidemic measures, with application to healthcare associated infections and their prevention. They will get an orientation on the current legislation in this field.
Expertise: The student knows the basic terminology in the field of microbiology, immunology and epidemiology, demonstrates the knowledge to name and classify infectious agents, knows the nature of the effects of antimicrobial agents and the emergence of resistance, knows the function and components of the immune system, knows the nature and forms of immunization, knows the clinical manifestations of changes in the immune system, knows the process of spread of infections, the meaning and procedures of anti-epidemic measures. Professional skills: The student is able to read and interpret professional literature in the field of microbiology, immunology and epidemiology applied to nursing, is able to collect biological material for microbiological and serological examination and transport it to the appropriate laboratories, is able to explain to the patient the correct way of using antimicrobial drugs with professional justification, is able to organize vaccination within the framework of primary prevention of infections. General competences: The student is able to communicate clearly to professionals and lay people the nature of professional problems in microbiology, immunology and epidemiology in relation to human health and to implement and coordinate preventive and nursing measures for health protection.
