Course content
Seminar topics (1 hour/week): 1. Communication - definition, function of communication, effective communication, levels of communication; 2. Communication - communication styles, ways of communication, types of communication; 3. Communication - obstacles, barriers in communication; 4. Non-verbal communication - definition, signs of non-verbal communication; 5. Non-verbal communication - the importance of non-verbal expressions in the nurses' work; 6. Verbal communication - definition, basic functions, basis of rhetoric; 7. Verbal communication - speeches, division, definition of spoken and written speech; 8. Communication in healthcare; 9. Empathy in the nurses' work; 10. Basics of assertiveness in medical practice; 11. Specifics of medical communication. Exercise topics: (1 hour/week) 1. The childs' speech development and its stages; 2. Language development and acquisition; 3. Principles of communication with a child patient 4. Principles of communication with a sick child 5. Child and pain 6. A child with a hearing impairment 7. Child with visual impairment 8. A child with a mobility disability 9. A child with a mental disability 10. Child in intensive care 11. A child with an unfavorable diagnosis

Learning outcomes
The subject is designed as a theoretical-practical unit. Students will get to know basic definitions of communication, principles of communication, emphasis is also placed on verbal and non-verbal communication. It forms the basis of the professional knowledge and skills of a pediatric nurse in establishing contact and gaining the trust of the child and his companion and for further effective and high-quality care for their individual needs. Students will learn the principles and skills of adequate communication not only with children that are able to talk, but also with those who do not talk yet, or their health does not allow it, or they are foreign. Students will learn to communicate better with co-workers or with family members and others. The aim of the subject is the development of communication skills in the practical level of the profession of a pediatric nurse.
Expertise: Student demonstrates knowledge of the principles of theoretical communication, is familiar with the principles of communication with specific groups of children. Professional skills: Student can name basic issues when communicating with different groups of child patients. General qualifications: Student is able to present his ideas using the acquired communication skills on a theoretical and practical level.
