Lecture topics: (3 hours/week) 1.Structure of psychiatric care in the Czech Republic; legal issues. 2. Psychiatric examination - examination methods, symptoms of mental disorders. Treatment in psychiatry - pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, other methods (ECT). 3. Mood disorders - depression, bipolar affective disorder. 4. Personality disorders - overview. 5. Mental anorexia and bulimia - diagnostic criteria and treatment. 6. Psychotic disorders - classification, diagnostic criteria. Addiction to addictive substances. Mental health care in different age groups of the population. Seminar topics: (2 hours/week). 1. Intensive nursing care - examples from practice. 2. Mental disorders in children and adolescents - specifics, case reports, diagnostic criteria. 3. Self-harm and suicidal behaviour. Eating disorders. 4. Neurotic disorders - classification, case reports. 5. Organic mental disorders - case reports. Addictions to addictive substances - examples from practice. 6. Enuresis and encopresis.

Learning outcomes

The course is designed as a theoretical and practical unit that introduces students to the causes of mental disorders, including specific issues of child psychiatry (CAN, Munchausen syndrome by proxy, suicidal behaviour, etc.), their diagnosis, treatment, prevention and nursing care. It provides information on the multidisciplinary approach to child mental health care and to the care of minors at risk for addiction to psychoactive substances. In addition, it describes the differences in the individual care provided by different health care providers (outpatient care, day care, inpatient care and care provided in the patient's own social environment).
Expertise: The student can: - Recognize the clinical manifestations of mental disorders. - The student will be able to recognize the clinical features of mental disorders in old age and childhood. - Describe basic examination and diagnostic methods in psychiatry. - List therapeutic options in psychiatry. Professional Skills: The student is able to: - take into account the legal aspects related to mental disorders. - justify the importance of nursing care as part of the treatment of mental disorders. General competencies: The student is able to communicate their own professional opinions clearly and persuasively to professionals and the general public.
