Course content
Lecture topics: 1. Introduction to special education, speech therapy (introduction, classification and etiology of speech defects). 2. Surdopaedia (introduction, classification and etiology of hearing defects). 3. Typhlopedy (introduction, classification and etiology of visual defects), deafblindness. 4. Psychopedics (introduction, classification and etiology of mental disability), etopedy (introduction, classification and etiology of behavioral disorders). 5. Somatopaedia (introduction, classification and etiology of physical disabilities and health impairments). 6. Partial deficiencies (introduction, classification and etiology of learning disorders and ADHD, ADD). Seminar topics: 1. Diagnostics in special education (demonstration of tests). 2. Speech therapy - specifics of education of individuals with impaired communication ability. 3. Surdopaedia - specifics of education of individuals with hearing impairment. 4. Typhlopedy - specifics of education of individuals with visual impairment. 5. Psychopedics - specifics of education of individuals with mental disabilities. 6. Somatopaedia - specifics of education of individuals with physical disabilities.

Learning outcomes
The subject acquaints students with basic knowledge of particular fields of special education. It enables students to fulfill one of the basic prerequisites for their future profession - care for the physically and mentally disadvantaged. It teaches the development of communication and cognitive processes.
Expertise: Within the framework of theoretical knowledge students demonstrate the ability to characterize individual fields of special education, to use professional terminology related to the issue, the ability to describe basic educational and training procedures for different types of disabilities. Professional skills: Students are able to propose adjustments to the environment, didactic aids, toys and children's game rules for given types of disabilities. Students are able to apply theoretical knowledge into practice. General eligibility: The student is able to orientate in valid legislation related to education of individuals with various types of disabilities, is able to recommend compensatory aids, is able to apply acquired knowledge and skills to other subjects.

Credit: 80% participation in teaching, demonstration of professional and practical knowledge. Exam: written test.
