Course content
Week 1: Integrated rescue system, the organization of pre-hospital emergency care. General principles and procedures for providing first aid, emergency resuscitation algorithm for an adult and a child. Week 2: Crisis management, disaster medicine, legislation. Excursion: - Emergency helicopter + Operation Centre Week 3: Head injury. Unconsciousness. Practical training: cardiopulmonary resuscitation for an adult and a child. Week 4: Injuries of the spine, joints and bones. The most common injuries among children and adults. Week 5: Abdominal and chest injuries. Bleeding. Shock states. Practical training. Week 6: The effects of heat and cold and their influence on a human body. Burns. Injuries affected by electric shock. Poisoning. Week 7: First aid for sudden internal states. Week 8: Dressing and bandage tools, treatment of wounds, stopping bleeding. Week 9: Crush syndrome. Blast Syndrome. Immobilization techniques. The position of the injured. Transporting. Week 10: Drowning. Choking. Anaphylactic shock. Injuries made by to animals, insects.

Learning outcomes
Students gain basic knowledge of providing the first aid. During the theoretical classes the emphasis will be put on acquiring knowledge of the states which can threaten human life especially the restoration of basic life functions. During practical seminars the students can learn how to provide the first aid in life-saving operations (CPR- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation), carry out anti-shock measures, stop bleeding, immobilize a fracture, treat different types of wounds and carry out positioning of the injured.
Subject Knowledge: The student can explain basic terms regarding first aid and describe principles of first aid. Professional Skills: The student can carry out general check-up of an injured person on the spot of the accident; - practical application of CPR (ensuring that the breathing ways function, not direct cardiac massage); - practical application of anti-shock measures of individual states; - practical application of means for stopping different types of bleeding; - practical application of a treatment for individual wounds and non-bleeding injuries; - practical application of treatment for fractures, bone and joint injuries, sport accidents; - practical application of means ensuring recovery and shock position.

Credit requirement: 85% seminar attendance and 80% passiong rate in a written test. Examination requirements: practical demonstration of a particular procedure including explaning its theoretical reasons.
