Course content
Lecture Topics: 1. consultation: Basic terms: survey and research, basic and applied research, qualitative and quantitative, experiment and investigation. Data gaining (population and selection, identifiers and statistical quantities, questionnaires: types of quantities, pilot investigation). Elementary data description (frequencies including multiple responses, contingency table, modus, median, average, standard deviation, box-plot, time-series and its characteristics). Introduction to data analysis: Gauss curve, population parameters, statistical hypothesis, the level of significance, t-tests, chi-squared test). Seminar Topics: 1. consultation: Work with e-catalogue of the UJEP library, with MEDVIK database and e-catalogue of Krajská zdravotní, a.s. (Regional Hospital) library Basics of working with databases Web of Science, SCOPUS, NursingOvid. MS-Office Excel (modus, median, average, standard deviation, multiple responses, contingency table). MS-Office Excel (commands TTEST, FTEST, CHITEST). Self-Study: By means of the e-learning course and using the literature students get familiar with selected ethical aspects of the research particularly with the issues of informed consent, copyright law and quotation standards. They will also study publishing principles (research definition, ISBN and ISSN, review procedure, impact factor). Students can watch informative videos about the research realized in laboratories at the Faculty of Health Studies. The knowledge will be tested by means of e-learning portal Moodle.

Learning outcomes
The subject covers the issues of scientific work beginning with problem specification, research activities, choosing the adequate method and making a questionnaire to selected options of statistical description of gained information and publication principles. The goal of this subject is particularly to provide students with practical instructions for thesis creating including delivering some information about the possibility to take part in the research carried out at the faculty.
Subject Knowledge: After completing the course students know the principles of scientific work in all its phases which means from planning through realization to publishing results and further they also know appropriate ethical standards and plagiarism issues. Professional Skills: After completing the course students can make research, gain data and with the help of elementary statistical methods, they can administer the data by means of a computer (mainly but not only for the purposes of bachelor's thesis).
Prerequisites
