Course content
Lecture Topics: 1. Introduction to healthcare management: definition and role of management in healthcare. History and development of healthcare organisation management. Specific features of managing healthcare facilities compared to other sectors. Basic principles and functions of management (planning, organising, leading, controlling). 2. Organisation of healthcare systems: types of healthcare systems (public, private, mixed). Comparison of healthcare systems in the Czech Republic and abroad (e.g. Germany, Sweden, USA). The role of ministries, insurance companies, and other stakeholders. Regulation and legislative framework of healthcare in the Czech Republic. 3. Healthcare financing: sources of healthcare funding (e.g. public, private, others). The role of health insurance companies in the Czech Republic. Reimbursement systems and their impact on quality of care. Cost analysis and economic efficiency in healthcare. 4. Strategic planning in healthcare: process and importance of strategic planning. Analysis of internal and external environment (SWOT, PEST, 7S). Setting objectives and performance indicators. Examples of strategy implementation in healthcare facilities. 5. The role of leadership in healthcare management: key leadership competencies and communication skills. 6. Implementation of change based on evidence-based practice. Conflict resolution in multidisciplinary environments. 7. Managerial communication competencies and their importance for leadership. Motivation and performance evaluation methods. 8. Quality and patient safety in healthcare: fundamentals of quality management in healthcare. National and international quality standards (e.g. JCI, ISO). Patient safety: error prevention and incident reporting. Quality indicators and measurement methods. 9. Innovation and digitalisation in healthcare: modern technologies and their applications (telemedicine, AI). 10. Electronic health records and data protection. The role of innovation in improving care efficiency. Examples of successful innovations in the Czech Republic and abroad. 11. Marketing and communication in healthcare: healthcare service marketing and its specifics. Branding of healthcare facilities. Effective communication with patients, families, and the public. Crisis communication management (e.g. during a pandemic). 12. Ethics and law in healthcare management: ethical dilemmas in healthcare (e.g. resource allocation, experimental treatment). Laws and regulations governing healthcare provision. The role of ethics committees and their decision-making processes. Protection of patient and healthcare worker rights. 13. Future challenges in healthcare management: demographic change and population ageing. Climate change and its impact on healthcare. Workforce crisis: shortage of healthcare professionals and coping strategies. The future of healthcare management ? trends and innovations.

Learning outcomes
The course Strategic Management and Leadership in Healthcare provides a comprehensive overview of the management of healthcare organisations and systems, with a focus on the specific characteristics of healthcare as a sector of both public and private administration. It combines theoretical knowledge with practical skills necessary for effective decision-making and the implementation of innovations in the dynamically changing healthcare environment. Students will gain knowledge of the functioning of healthcare systems, their financing, strategic planning, quality and patient safety management, as well as the role of technology and digitalisation in improving healthcare service outcomes. An important part of the course is also the development of leadership and communication skills essential for managers at all levels of healthcare organisations.
After completing the course, the student will be able to: 1. Analyse healthcare organisations and systems and propose improvements. 2. Identify financial, organisational, and human resource challenges in healthcare and address them effectively. 3. Work with modern technologies and support their implementation in professional practice. 4. Take ethical and legal aspects into account in management and decision-making within healthcare facilities.

Assessment methods and criteria

Active participation in lectures and in group discussions of real-life case studies, as well as participation in group activities focused on conflict resolution (role-playing). Based on these activities, the student will develop a proposal for improving healthcare management.
