Course content
1.-2. Totalitarianism: a historical overview. 3. Fashism, Nazism and Stalinism. 4. The cultural policies of totalitarian states before the 2nd WW. 5. The cultural policies of totalitarian states after the 2nd WW until 1990. 6. The Hungarian case 1: Tamas Szentjoby, Miklos Erdely. 7. The Hungarian case 2: Dora Maurer, Tibor Hajas, Gyula Pauer, Endre Toth. 8. The Hungarian case 3: the Spions, the Halasz Theatre. 9. The Yugoslavian case 1: Mladen Stilinovich, Mangelos, Vlasta Delimar, Sanja Ivekovic. 10. The Yugoslavian case 2: Neue Slowenische Kunst: Laibach. 11. The Yugoslavian case 3: Neue Slowenische Kunst: IRWIN. 12. Final discussion and presentation of semestral works.

Learning outcomes
The course summarizes the historical and theoretical references of the totalitarian ideologies (from antiquity through renaissance to faschism, national socialism and stalinism) with special focus on the post-2nd WW Stalinism in the Central-Eastern European region. The series of lectures are divided into two units. The units represent two different historical conditions, two different national identities, two different political structures and two different cultural policies of two neighboring "socialist" countries and the critical art practices from these countries during the periods of the totalitarian states. The first unit introduces the Hungarian case, the art policy of supported-tolerated-banned in the '60s and '70s and the illegal, underground neo-avantgarde art practices of those two decades. The second unit introduces the Yugoslavian case and its critical art of the '80s. The lecture introdices the basic terminology and historical context of totalitarian states in order to support the subject Central European Art.
The gained capabilities constitute an encompassment and an aquirement of knowledge and experience in the subject and are aimed at a profile´s fulfilment of the graduate of the given field of study.
