1. Definition of basic terms. Characteristics of design as a specific field of material and visual culture. 2. Characteristics of the current design. Possible definitions, re-definitions of the concept of design in the contemporary context. 3. Sources of contemporary design against the background of historical development since the middle of the 19th century. 4. Formation of the field of design and its components: industrial design, product design, graphic design. 5. Establishment of exhibition and collection institutions focused on applied art and design and the creation of the design curator profession. 6. Development of theoretical discourse and reflection of the art industry environment. 7. Social and educational role of design in historical context. 8. The role of design and mass production in shaping modern lifestyles. 9. Gender aspects of the development of modern design from the first half of the 20th century to the present. 10. Exhibition and collection institutions in the Czech Republic and abroad focused on design and applied art. Importance of documentation a historical research of design and applied art. 11. Science and research as an integral part of the development of design practice and theory. 12. Professional media, periodicals and internet resources. Publication activity focused on design issues.

The course is focused on the explanation of basic terms in the field of design, the characteristics and evolution of the field of design from the beginnings of industrialization and its further development to the present day, including the creation of exhibition, collection and educational institutions. Attention is paid mainly to the issue of contemporary and contemporary theoretical reflection of design and its presentation with a focus on curatorial practice since its inception in the 19th century.
The gained capabilities constitute an encompassment and an aquirement of knowledge and experience in the subject and are aimed at a profile´s fulfilment of the graduate of the given field of study. |
