Course content
|
1. Definition of basic terms. Design, environmental issues, ecology, sustainability. 2. Environmental challenges of the present. 3. Ancient overture. The oldest examples of ecosystem disturbance due to mass production. Parallels with the present. 4. Current theoretical reflections focused on the role of design in the process of creating sustainable development. 5. The environment as a complex comprising ecosystems and man-made material culture. 6. Visual culture and its material and intangible sphere as a part of the environment. 7. Creating public space as a spontaneous process and as a planned activity. 8. Landscape creation. The influence of agriculture, forestry and industry during the development of human civilization. 9. The beginnings of industrialization in the 16th century and its impact on the environment. 10. Mass devastation of the landscape as a consequence of mass production in the 16th - 19th century. Parallels with the present. 11. The first significant critique of the social, aesthetic and ecological impacts of industrialization in the 19th century. Including graphic design. The emergence of the field of design. 12. The emergence of new materials and technologies since the mid-19th century. Development of synthetic materials and plastics. Development of paper and printed media production. 13. Contemporary view of utopian visions and critical views of the 19th century in connection with the development of civilization. The role of design.

Learning outcomes
|
The optional course is focused on environmental issues in the context of current design practice with regard to the development of a design approach to environmental aspects of the field. Part of the course is acquaintance with a broader theoretical context including ecological and social contexts. Emphasis is also placed on a comprehensive perception of environmental issues, including practical issues of everyday practice from the perspective of the designer, artist and user, respectively. recipient.
The gained capabilities constitute an encompassment and an aquirement of knowledge and experience in the given field of study, they result from a concrete annotation of the subject and are aimed at a profile´s fulfilment of the graduate of the given field of study.
