The aim of the course is to place specific dissertation projects in their respective philosophical contexts. For each individual dissertation project, a specific philosophical context and its corresponding philosophical literature will be identified in individual consultations. The philosophical contexts of a particular research topic will normally be twofold: thematic and/or methodological. A thematic context will be identified where the research topic will directly interfere with, or at least touch upon, a particular philosophical topic. The thematic link may be direct (the PhD project is directly related to a philosophical question, which is to be expected in a minimum of cases) or indirect (the philosophical topic brings an interdisciplinary complement or contrast to the PhD project). 2. The methodological context will be established in those cases where the research project will directly raise epistemological, hermeneutical or ethical philosophical questions. These questions may relate to the process of research through art and the nature of the resulting dissertation narrative. The course is based on individual and group consultations with the instructor in order to accommodate, as much as possible, the particular needs and thematic focus of each student's dissertation project. At the option of the doctoral student*s, the course will conclude with an individual defense of the thesis presented orally or in writing.
The acquired competences represent the mastery and acquisition of knowledge in the given field, are based on the specific annotation of the subject and are aimed at fulfilling the profile of a graduate of the given field.
