The physical properties of surfaces and interfaces are generally different from those of bulk materials. Surface atoms, have a smaller number of nearest neighbor atoms. Surface properties and properties of thin layers depend on many parameters, e.g. chemical composition of the surface and crystallographic arrangement of surface atoms, method of deposition, etc. Specific physical properties of thin layers different from bulk properties. In addition to chemical and structural parameters, the interaction with the substrate and the environment must also be taken into account.
