Learning outcomes
Many useful properties of metallic and non-metallic materials are determined by the condition of the surface. Within this state, it is important to pay attention to the knowledge of the basic regularities and properties of surfaces and the possibilities of improving these surfaces. In addition to conventional surface treatments, micro and nano coatings/layers and composite coatings/layers with special properties are on the rise in technical practice. Surface properties and properties of thin coatings/layers depend on many parameters, e.g. chemical composition of the surface and crystallographic arrangement of surface atoms, method of deposition, etc. Physical properties of surfaces and interfaces are generally different from bulk properties of the material. The thin coating/layer is bounded by two very close interfaces (in terms of distance), which explains the often specific physical properties of thin layers and coatings that differ from bulk properties. In addition to chemical and structural parameters, the interaction with the substrate and the environment must also be taken into account.
